Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at a couples counseling session?
At our first session together it will be an opportunity for me to get to know you and your relationship. I will ask you lots of questions about how you met and what you like(d) about each other. This will serve as a kind of guide we can return to when we get stuck. Then we get into the problems that are impacting your relationship. Neither of you are THE problem. There is a problem and you need to be a team that works against the problem. After that, the process and speed of our work is really up to the two of you... it will be a combination of processing things in session and working on homework outside of our sessions. The most important thing to remember about couples counseling is that it is a safe space to talk about real things where you won't experience judgement.

How do I know if you're the right counselor for me/us?
Before we meet for our first session, we can set up a time to meet via phone or video for 15 minutes with absolutely no obligation. During that time I will answer any questions you have about the process, my training, my methods, and anything else you want to know before starting a confidential, therapeutic relationship with a professional therapist. At the end of our meeting we can either schedule our first session or you can take time to make a decision. It's ultimately all up to you.

 How much does counseling cost?
Couples Counseling (50 minute session) - $150 / session
Individual Counseling (50 minute session) - $100 / session

Please note: Most insurance does not typically cover couples counseling. Couples counseling is hard work and it shouldn't add financial stress to your relationship, so let's talk about sliding scale counseling if that's something that interests you. Unless other arrangements have been made in advance, payment is accepted at the end of each session by debit/credit card. Some health savings account (HSA) and flex spending account (FSA) plans will pay for counseling services as well; please check with your insurance provider. I will also provide you with an invoice/Superbill that you can submit for reimbursement.

Where are you located?
I do not have a physical office. Not having to pay rent or utilities on an office space allows me to keep my rates as manageable as possible. I am licensed to do counseling in the state of Washington and I am based in the Seattle area. All of my work is done virtually via a secure, HIPAA compliant platform called SimplePractice. This means as long as you are in the state of Washington, I can meet with you in whatever private space that feel most comfortable -- your living room, your car, your office.

What is Narrative Therapy?

As a Narrative Therapist, my job is to help separate you and your relationship from the problem.  Narrative Therapy is a respectful, non-blaming form of counseling that approaches our therapeutic work together with the belief that you are the expert in your own life. You can learn more HERE and HERE.
